Te Wahipounamu is a gorgeous area and we loved Haast! But then, we were awestruck by New Zealand as a whole.

Its a beautiful area. Not very populated but scenery is great. If you are asking because you are going there, try to drive a little further up the West Coast to Maruia Springs and try the hot pools. Check out the link for more info.

I've been there, but only as an extremely brief stop on the journey. The west coast is beautiful though.

I first went there in 1992 when there was no proper road and it felt very remote. It can be beautiful, dull, wet, sunny, scary, isolated, amazing - a lot depends on the time of year and the weather as all elements give it a different feel.

Been there many times, one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
If you visit, try a jet boat ride at Makarora, http://www.makarora.co.nz/
Also, spend some time in Wanaka.

Yes, on our way to Franz Josef. Unfortunately it was pouring with rain and thick with mist, we couldn't see much of it and by-passed a lot of the area.
