good enough but compared to the cheapest digital cameras they are all poor
for photos you plan to print you need a camera
and if you only plan 4"x 6" prints and no blowing up then 1 megapixel is OK ( hard to find a camera - cept phones - with less )

640 X 480 is a VERY bad picture. Most phones today are 1.3 MP or better. The new Apple phone is 5.1 MP but it is very expensive. My Samsung A900 is 1.3 MP and I really cannot do much with the pictures except send them to another phone. If I tried to print them, they would be very small and blurry. Your choice is either pay a lot for a phone that has great picture quality or settle for bad to mediocre picture quality for now. In a year, all phones will probably have 5 MP cameras.

Not really. A good digital camera is 5 mega-pixels or more. VGA (640 x 480) is about one-third of 1 mega-pixel.

Resolution is only one part of what makes a good camera. If you're just sending images to other phones 640x480 may be fine. If you want to print some of the images you take then you will probably want a higher resolution.
Have a look to at whether the lens has any focus mechanism. Some recent phones have auto-focus cameras. Most are 'focus free', resulting in soft images at anywhere but 1-2m distance.

VGA quality phones are pretty much a dime a dozen these days. the cameras in camera phones is similar technology to what they use in webcams...that's why both have about the exact same quality.
if you can find a camera phone with more resolution (some are up to 3MP), then diffently go with that. 640x480 lacks a lot of detail..it's great for phone snaps, but that's just about it.

For your mobile phone, the resolution is good, but we don't find a lot of VGA cameras these days, even for a mobile phone: try to have SVGA or in megapixels

I cannot tell you if it is good until you say me the price of the camera.
