I don't think there is a wrong or right way. (It's just probably that you do it differently than she does!)

I've always used a potato peeler and shucked the peels away from me into a bowl or the trash. I have seen people slowly draw the peels towards them. I've seen people use paring knives too, but I don't like that since I take too much of the potato off with the skin.

If the potato is new! this years crop - there should be little or no skin on it. You should simply wash them and cook. The skin has the most protein in it. When the potato has a heavy skin, a potato peeler is best, using a pairing knife removes too much! When using a "potato peeler" pull towards yourself, using your thumb, only on carrots should you peel away from yourself. Potato's are a natural source of energy and can be cooked in hundreds of ways. Keep cooking, the more you learn the less your groceries will cost you.

Any way you want is fine. I have one veggie peeler that works better going towards you and I tend to use it on round fruits and veggies. My other veggie peeler is great for peeling away from you like with carrots. I have a harder time with this peeler because I am left handed and one blade is sharper than the other.

just preference really.

potato peeler. Tell your mother in law to mind her own business. If the potato gets peeled, that's all that matters.

How about a new way to do it all together. Boil the potato first. Once it's cooked douse it with cold water. When it's cool enough to handle, simply slide the peels off with your hands. I tried the method with sweet potatos the other day and it worked great!

When I told my husband he was doing it wrong, it was because he was using the peeler's dull edge instead of the blade.

Other than that, cooking is not a test with only one right answer. Unless you were doing it in an unsafe manner, the correct response for you to make would have been, "Thanks for the suggestion, Mom-in-law, but this method works well for me."

I use a peeler and push away. My mother-in-Law uses a knife and draws to her getting only one peel.

Do what you feel comfy doing. Just don't hurt yourself :)
