England = Land of the Angles, a Germanic tribe which invaded and settled most of what is now England in 5th & 6th centuries AD.
The Saxons and Jutes also settled parts of England over the same period (hence Anglo-Saxon).
The indiginous population ( the 'ancient Brits') were forced into what is now Wales and Cornwall.
The various tribes were united in the 10th century before the Norman conquest of 1066.
