Working in the NICU is a specialty, and most specialty areas utilize RN's. Vocational school can teach you to be a medical assistant, and some programs will give you the educational requirements to take the LPN or practical nurse (depending on your states terminology) boards. To be a registered nurse, you need at least an associates degree from college. To work in such a specialized area a bachelors is probably a better idea. You won't get much experience in the NICU while in school, but most programs have a senior practicum where you can choose a specialty area and you may be able to pick NICU for that. Depending on how the nursing shortage situation is in your area, you may find that working in the NICU requires experience in pediatrics or med/surg after you get your license.

No matter what kind of profession you choose, if you can afford it and you can get in, you should go to college instead of vocational school. It will just make it easier for you to go further in your chosen field. Good luck!
