Tell ya what, they have some really high tech thermostats out there right now for heat pump and dual fuel systems that will actually determine the most efficient way your unit should operate based on temperatures and common setpoints you are currently using. White Rogers brand in particular. But the configurations will have to be properly set along with all other system components involved. Its a very expensive thermostat but well worth it. The White Rogers multi stage thermostat is what its called.

The heat pump will still keep you warmer that the outside temparatures but not toasty warm.
