It seems that many would agree that Volvo is a "Safe" choice.....but did you know that Ford owns Volvo ?

I suggest you look at a Ford Five Hundred.
It's actually built from a Volvo platform & last year it was named THE safest car by BOTH the NHSTA & The Insurance Institutes

Volvo safety at a Ford price....I don't think you can go wrong.

If you want something smaller,( like the Honda or Saturn)...take a look at the Fusion while you're at the Ford store.

Or go to http://fordvehicles.com & check them both out!
From Fords site you can also do a side-by-side comparison with of these vehicles.

I'd do some research at the NHTSA site:

http://www.safercar.gov/info.htm - read about how ratings work

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ncap/ - find ratings on cars and compare

These days most cars earn 4 and 5 star ratings since Americans demand safety, so you're not really at risk of getting an unsafe car. Volvos have a reputation for being safe because traditionally it was a safety leader, but its crash ratings may surprise you.

It comes down to what safe cars you prefer for reasons beyond just safety like looks, power, price, reliability, etc.

For that, I'd look at http://www.edmunds.com and do some research on the car models or groups that interest you. There you can compare cars side by side and see what best suits you.

Volvo is number one in safety, but God help you pay for them when they break. My wife drives a Honda Accord but it is little more than a beer can with wheels. Her replacement for this is going to be either a Chevy Blazer or somthing like it. Trucks tend to be over built and in this day of econo boxes I feel a LOT safer is a truck.

Volvo is safest. But Saab has a 4 star crash rating. The most most unsafe car is a Jeep.
