Some believe that the best way is to go straight for lessons .
I think you need to just go to a driving range a few times and hit some balls, also read up on the rules and ettequette of the game which is very important. There are a great deal of web sites to show and explain the proper grip and swing so that should get you started.
Once you have done this I then would go for some lessons and after the lessons get a set of clubs fitted. Its always good to play golf with someone that is fairly good and enjoys the game because you can learn a lot from them by simply watching.
Just remember, it wont happen over night, be patient and enjoy the journey into this great game.

Go to the website www.playgolfamerica.com look for a program called Link Up 2 Golf or First Swing. Do not buy any equipment they will supply it. The cost should be $99.00 and include 3 trips out on the golf course. They will teach you everything from the time you get to the parking lot

Lessons. Practice. Golf Channel. Training aids. Practice on actual course.
I'm 14 years old, I have a 13 handicap and I have only been playing for 8 months. I practice everyday for 6 hours to get better.

Go to your local PGA Professional and take lessons. Unless you go that way, anyone else unqualified to teach will just get you frustrated. Just because someone can play a decent round of golf doesn't mean they can teach it. PGA Professionals are trained to do so.

Lessons and practice are the only way. It is one of the hardest sports to get good at since the object is to hit the ball the least amount of times.
