For neck and shoulder aches and stiffness, definitely a massage therapist, that would decrease any rigidity (spasm) increase range of motion, and if those aches are causing headaches massage will help release any tension. Massage will sooth out those muscles that are tense and achy, a chiro, well...he will align the vertebra which can help with spastic muscles, but i rather be relax for an hour or 30mins and work on my neck and shoulder.
Good luck, be well ^i^

My approach is to put the person on an anti inflammatory pain medication and a muscle relaxant so that the physical therapy modalities will be more effective. A Physical Therapist, a Massage Therapist, and a Chiropractor are equally good options. The choice is dependent upon the individual's personal experience in neck and shoulder strain and spasm. The muscle fibers in this area are spiraled meaning that the hands must unwind and stretch the fibers at the same time which takes quite a bit of skill.

In reality, that's all a chiropractor is, a paid masseur - a very EXPENSIVE one, at that. They are well-trained at techniques that do help with those aches and stiffnesses you describe, but if your aches and pains stem from more serious causes, such as rheumatoid arthritis, the Chiropractor isn't going to be able to help you much. You'd do better in that case to visit an orthopedic surgeon for a proper evaluation and referral to a licensed physical therapist as well as prescriptions for anti-inflammatory medicines.
Don 't ever let a Chiropractor tell you he or she will fix things by correcting your "subluxations" - those are figments of the Chiropractors' imagination. They don't exist.
One reason these guys and gals are so popular is that they give a patient a lot of personal attention during each visit -which many orthodox physicans sometimes neglect. Nevertheless, for anythying beyond ordinary aches and pains - you need far more than a Chiropractor is capable of providing!

I would start with a chiropractor. Mine is affiliated with a masseuse, and if he feels it necessary, I can get a massage as well. Perhaps you can locate a similar situation where you are.
I am a doctor, and a few years ago, when I hurt my back, I went to the spine doctor, who promptly sent me to a chiropractor. So there is a nice interface between allopathic medicine and chiropractic medicine for certain things, such as you describe.

MASSAGE. I don't believe in chiropractic myself. I don't want anyone messing with the alignment of my back/spine that isn't a medical doctor/surgeon. Chiropractors and NOT doctors.
Try the massage. Remember to drink lots of water afterwards to flush out the toxins. I promise you will feel like a new person.

A massage once a week will help. A chiropractor might make it worse.

Definately get a message .. or even better .. ask your doctor to let you try the prescription Flexeril ... it works awesome. I get neck and shoulder pains and stiffness on a daily routine .. if it weren't for Flexeril i'd go nuts.
