RCD is an abbreviation for Residual Current Device. An old name for these units was Earth Leakage Contact Breaker (ELCB).

It works by comparing the current in the live wire to the current in the neutral wire in a mains circuit. If all was well, these currents would be the same. However, if you put your finger on a live contact, current would be sucked down to earth through your body. This is result in you having an electric shock. (It is not recommended and could lead to your demise). The RCD will detect this imbalance and in a fraction of a second switch off the voltage, so you will get a short sharp shock and live to tell the tale.
