Hi
There is quite a bit of misinformation amongst the answers so far and the question is not as straightforward as it seems. I'm a colon hydrotherapist so detoxing is part of my life.
In the UK many people now suffer micromalnutrition which means that they have enough to eat but because of their poor food choices they end up with insufficient nutrients. If you fall into this category (lots of fast food, takeaways, alcohol and little fruit, veg and good quality protein) then going without food is not going to do you that much good and will put further strain on your organs. Someone who falls into this category would be far better to significantly increase their nutrient intake during a detox and the easiest way is to have lots of fresh vegetable and fruit juice. It also helps to add fibre such a psyllium husk. A fast with only water is only really suitable for those in good health who normally eat an excellent diet.
If you really want to detox then eliminating caffeine, carbonated drinks, alcohol, colourings, flavourings, preservatives, chlorine (from unfiltered tap water), sugar, artifical sweetners and milk. Eat whole grains, fruit and vegetables with a palm sized portion of good quality protein two to three times a day. You could also add some superfoods such as wheatgrass or a spirulina supplement. You need to drink two litres of water per day (and more when the weather is hot or you are exercising and sweating).
Having a colonic or two during your detox will also assist as it is very effective at removing old waste from your colon. It gives a tremendous feeling of wellbeing.
You would also benefit from supplementing with probiotics although choose carefully as many brands don't deliver the amount they promise. Give the probiotic drinks at the supermarket a miss - they have little chance of delivering good bacteria to your gut.
I could go on for ages but hope this is helpful. Good luck.

Unless you have a serious medical condition then a detox from all foods is a good idea. You might want to go for longer than 24 hours ie 48 maybe. Also when you go back to food, maybe start off with simple stuff like fruit and veg.
If you really want to get into it, some health farms do stuff like colonic irrigation. It may sound a bit icky but can dislodge and wash out bits of fibre etc. that has been hanging about 'up there' for a while.

If you want to detox, then your going to have to sweat out the impurities by using a saunea, or working out. Also take supplements that help your liver function. Drinking water helps but it's not going to completely detox your system.

It depends what state your health is in. If you are in good health but are feeling a little bloated/overfed/sluggish then sure, why not. Just make sure it is only one day of fasting, and that you *do* drink plenty of water. If you end up feeling faint, though, make sure you eat something sugary.
xx

YES. But, caution, water is fast becoming UNFIT to drink unless boiled. So boil then chill and drink all day every day. Its very good for the bowels too!
