There are always going to be bumps in life. Its better to guide them than to lead. Everyone has to learn from their own mistakes in life in order to be a better person.

Let them know EXACTLY what the consequences could be..Don't skimp because you're afraid of scaring them. I would tell my kids when they were younger and were playing out side not to go in the road because if they did they could get hit by a car and could die and mommy and daddy would never see them again..It's the truth and if anyone thinks it's too harsh or aggressive tell me why my kids never went in the road and could tell other kids why they shouldn't play in the road (because they could get hurt really bad and never see their mommy or daddy again) I always tell them what the consequences are, talking to strangers, don't because there are sick men and women in this world who like to take little girls and boys and touch them in their bad spots and even hurt them real bad and never let them see mommy or daddy again..Harsh??? My kids NEVER leave my sight and stay with me in stores/never run off. And also playing in the kitchen while I'm cooking, being by the stove and hot food, they know they could get burned very badly. They know what they should and should not do/say because I have drilled it into their heads. They are 7 & 8 and although I am their mother I am very happy with the way they have turned out and very proud of the smart little beings that they have become.

There are so many things that they HAVE to learn the hard way no matter what. I did tell my 12 year old a story about drinking and driving though and hopefully it sunk in.

My father always told me to read between the lines. And my advice to the young is listen to the elders and read everything that you can get your hands on.
