Samuel Colt invented the first revolver - named after its revolving cylinder. He was issued a U.S. patent in 1836 for the Colt firearm equipped with a revolving cylinder containing five or six bullets with an innovative cocking device.

Sorry, guys. Contrary to what the folks at Colt would like you to believe, the revolving pistol actually predated his design by at least 25 years.

What Sam Colt *did* was invent a commercially successful firearm that took advantage of all the latest developments. Nothing more.

No one really knows who invented the original revolving pistols....but by 1815, they were common. They were called "pepperbox pistols" because the entire rotating cylinder/barrel assembly looked like a pepper grinder. By 1821, single barrel pistols with a revolving cylinder were being produced. Those were called "transitional pepperboxes". They predated Colt's design by at least 15 years.

Yup,it's whoever invented the pepperbox pistol.Colt made the first successful revolver design, but it wasn't the first revolver.

Colt's first design was the Patterson revolver,in 1836.
