Same boat and it hurts. Big hug from me to you.
Well I wouldn't spend alot, but yes have something the kids can open and play with. They're gonna want to take the gifts with them too. You can't do anything about the parents.

Do any of them understand that we won't be here forever.

Invite everyone over to your house, even if u don't get along that well, because of the children and the holiday, most people can fain liking ea other for at least one day. Try doing it X-mas Eve or the weekend before X-Mas, that way there might be a better chance of the Grand kids making it.
As far as being left out, it doesn't sound that way w/ them visiting once a week. That's more than most G-parents get, and as far as the gifts I would keep something cool, like a video game system( I'd go w/ the Nintendo WII if it's in your budget, it's the cheapest $250 vs $400 or $600, kids love it, and it actually forces the kids to move around and exercise while they play). I bet the Grand kids will be begging to come over.

Call the children's mother and express your feelings in a gentle non-threatening manner. There is very little at all that you can do that they are not married and have moved on in different directions in their lives. Call the mother and express to her your desire to have more time to spend with the grandchildren. Good luck and God bless****
