I have been subjected to the envious behavior of a co-worker and I lost my job because of it. Is there a way to protect oneself from the envious behavior of others? A way to deter that envy if possible?

When dealing with an envious co-worker, I kill them with kindness, and I'm not talking about lip service. You must be genuine when doing this for it to work. Obviously they have massive insecurities, and perceive you as some kind of threat. I would also suggest keeping ones personal, and professional life mum. In essence, do not give anyone a reason to hold you in contempt. The old saying is true, "keep your friends close, your enemies closer".

Sadly...this is a common problem...you can either dwell on it, or go to the boss and explain your side of the circumstances...if it was a really good paying job,...you might want to seek legal council....unless it WAS the boss...many times, people get threatened by seeing someone else who just plain does it better,..and they will sabotage you...Just keep looking for the place that actualy appreciates what you do...Sorry to hear this.

Whenever you have a chance to help someone out or do a good deed for someone, do it. Even if that person can't "help" further your career goals or if it slightly inconveniences you Become known as someone who is kind, thoughtful and helpful, and people will say that you deserve your success.

Be less cool.

Barring that, make your co-workers get lives.
