I think it is wonderful your friend wants to wear a sari for a Christmas dinner. Not only is it completely appropriate, but could even be perceived by some to be charming (think about a Scottish man wearing a traditional kilt - this is viewed as charming my many). It is vital that we remember to appreciate cultural traditions for peoples who now live in America. What better time to do this than at the holidays!

Since the occasion requires a formal attire, tell her to wear either a good cotton (not the boring ones) or a chiffon or a silk saree. And tuck the saree real neatly over the shoulder.
My suggestion - dark coloured silk saree with a heavy zari border.

I don't see a problem. Most *educated* Americans appreciate the fact that American society is composed of people from many different cultures. A nice saree is great for formal gatherings. For Christmas, make it red with a bit of gold.

I think it's alright for her to wear what she wants. She is Indian and sarees are part of her.

What's wrong with that? Some women wear dress pants--no one says they should all be in dresses.

I don't see any problem with that at all. As for colors, that's totally up to her. There is no reason why she can't wear whatever color suits her.
