bad breath may sometimes be caused by the foods you eat, but often its the work of germs in your mouth which are found naturally.
you can decrease this by using antiseptics such as listerine, which will actually kill the germs that cause bad breath (just like the commercial). they now have them in little "to-go" packs which dissolve in your mouth. Brushing your teeth after meals will also decrease bacteria in the mouth.
Typically gum will not do anything, other than temporarily mask the odor. Worse, if it's one with sugar, all you're doing is providing more food for the bacteria.

Of course, the first question is "Does he have good oral hygiene?" Does he brush his teeth at least twice a day, floss, and brush his tongue? Has he seen a dentist lately to rule out any gum disease that could be a factor?
If the answer is "yes" to those questions, then look at what he eats and drinks. Certain foods and alcohol cause an odor. Does he smoke? That certainly can cause bad breath.
Does he have any health problems? Diabetes can cause bad breath. If he is chronically constipated, he can have bad breath. Their are others.
Activated charcoal supplements can help with bad breath. Take a couple about one hour before each meal. Chlorophyll capsules also work. Those are taken with the meal. If the problem is REALLY bad use both.

Bad breath is usually caused from plaque underneath the gum line.
you boyfriend needs to floss regularly, along with brushing. If his gums look red and bleed while brushing then this is a sign of gum disease. He should get his teeth cleaned the first time professionally and then keep up with the flossing and brushing.
in the mean time he should use a good mouth wash,Listerine that fights bacteria.

Start with a professional cleaning and evaluation in your dental office. After that, you have to maintain your clean mouth at home.
Floss, brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, rinse with a mouthwash of your choice.
Avoid foods that make bad breath, like onions and garlic. If none of that helps, consult your doctor or dentist to see where the smell is coming from.
If you do a search on the internet using "bad breath" as your search term, you will find almost five MILLION references. Here's a good place to start:
http://www.ada.org/public/topics/bad_breath.asp
The odors from garlic and onions enter your blood stream and then it takes a couple of DAYS before you breathe it all off. As you do this, you will continue to have bad breath. You can only use a mouthwash or breath mint (sugarless) as needed to mask the odor. I have read a lot of answers here saying to eat parsley to get rid of garlic breath, but I have no personal experience with this. Try it.

Most people's bad breath comes from their tongue. The tongue has many grooves and places for bacteria to hide and grow. Everytime to eat, the bacteria also eat. Anything that eats must ...um... void. The waste is very acidic and that's what causes cavities. To remove these smelly guests, use a tongue scrapper. Simply brushing only moves them around, and does not remove them. A great breath system in called Breath Rx. It can be purchased from many dentists. Call around in your area to find one that sells the system. It has toothpaste, tongue scrapper, mints, gum, mouthwash, and fresh mouth spray. It's a great system!

Usually bad breath is caused by decaying food particles within the mouth. Also, the papillae (taste buds) accumulate debris which is a contributing factor.
Also, dental cavities and periodontal disease are another frequent cause.
In the absence of disease, bacteriostatic conditioning (killing the germs) is the key to fresh breath.
Brush frequently with a soft brush. I also swish and gargle with hydrogen peroxide myself -- but it's not for everybody. Use a good germ killing mouthwash.
Tongue scraping (there are plastic devices for this sold with tooth brushes) is recommended by dental professionals. I personally just brush my tongue with hydrogen peroxide.
If dental problems exist it is an excellent idea to visit your dental professional for evaluation and treatment.

He should see a dentist to get his teeth cleaned and checked. He might have cavities or really needs a teeth cleaning or even may have a gum disease. If all of that does not work then it may be his diet, sometimes what we eat causes us to have bad breath.

See a dentist for regular cleanings and floss daily after every meal. However, he may have a gum disease or a tooth that has decay. So best to see the dentist. Good luck and God bless****

Let him brush his teeth as often possibly every after meal. Maybe he has some dental caries or gingivitis; if so he has to go to the dentist for this.
