I'd definitely recommend the Canon range. The Powershot A430 is a good one, it has 4 x optical zoom and well within your price range -4 million megapixels. Also the Canon Ixus range are great, extremely compact and take great pics - most are at least 6 million megapixels. the advantage with the Ixus cameras is that they have a rechargeable lithium ion battery which lasts for ages. All are much cheaper to buy online (savings of up to £100 even in this price range). I'd recommend www.pixmania.com or once you decide the model you want put it through pricerunner www.pricerunner.com.

The camera will be the least of your expenses. You can pick up quite useful and efficient cameras in most supermarkets now. However, you will require a printer (unless you use Boots or such). The ink for the printer, not to mention the paper is also expensive.
If you can afford it, get one with a 'cradle' or 'docking station', it makes the transferring of photos from your camera to the computer so much more easy. It also charges the battery at the same time, just plug in and go. Try to get a ready made battery and carry a spare otherwise ordinary batteries will only take a dozen or so photos especially if you use flash. The total system is brilliant but be prepared for disasters, disappointment and frustration at the beginning. Guaranteed to cost you (or the girlfriend) a lot more than £150.................

Do a little online research at web sites like dcresource.com. They do a detailed review and I think they have a list of recommended cameras broken down by price range. I have found them to be accurate and would highly consider any camera they recommend.
If it were me I'd take a good look at the Canons. I'm a Nikon SLR shooter but like the Canon point-and-shoot camera lineup. In your budget be sure to factor in an additional memory card. The camera makers usually provide only a small card and you will need something bigger to take advantage of a 6 megapixel camera. I'd recommend at least 1GB and the prices for those are pretty good though online sources.

Sony, Panasonic have good ones in your price range. If in the UK
look up Jessops or Jacobs, you can do it on Internet. Only remember
that the Zoom should be on the lens and not digital since this only
reduces the number of pixels and you will have quality loss. Jacobs
have a trade-in policy, so if you have any camera it can reduce your
cost.
