Use a spray bottle of water to deter him when you're around along with verbal commands like an immediate sharp, loud "NO!" When you're not around, lay some aluminum foil or double sided sticky tape on the floor under the tree. Those may not be attractive alternatives, but the cat will hate the feel of it on his paws. For a more attractive alternative, check out Petsafe.net for something called a "Scat Mat". This could hide under your tree skirt and will emit a scary sound when the cat steps in that area. Spray repellents really don't work without constant re-applications.

I have the same problem with my two cats. I just got an aerosol repellent called Boundary yesterday, and it seems to be working so far. We just sprayed it on the tree skirt, and on the bottom branches of the tree. The cats have walked up to the tree, but back away when they smell the repellent.
If that doesn't work for you, you could try squirting him with a water bottle when he gets near the tree.

I used to have this problem, and that i've got 2 cats so it exchange into two times the worry. What you're able to do is purchase a twig-bottle (it particularly is observed as a misting bottle or something comparable), fill it with water, and whenever you notice the cat mountain climbing the tree, spray the cat with the water... i assume that your cat, like maximum cats, does not like being moist, so at last it particularly is going to study that by mountain climbing, it particularly is going to alter into moist and uncomfortable. needless to say, swap off your christmas tree lighting fixtures furnishings until eventually now you do this :p You observed as additionally decrease off the decrease branches of the tree so the cat can no longer climb. If it particularly is the decorations your cat is involved in, go away some baubles (no longer glass ones...) mendacity on the floor so the cat can play with them. If all else fails, take care of the tree extra effective so it could no longer fall over and merely permit the cat do what it needs...

i had a cat that climbed the tree and the tree fell while he was in it that cured him pretty quick. everytime he goes near the tree squirt him with a water bottle. they hate water. i smack my cat on his 'butt' (more or less the top of his hind leg on his side) cats are a lot like children. and no i dont' hit the cat hard just enough to let him know he's doing something wrong. maybe you should just shove the tree over when the cat gets in it. ha ha

When you water the tree, spray the inner branches with vinegar (full strength) at least once a day (kitty smells birdy or chip n dale in tree and wants to explore the new smells).

When we first got one of my cats, we had the same problem. What we did was we stacked things (boxes, pillows, etc) in front of the tree to keep him from getting over there.
