i live in a fairly small midwestern town and even here, where ever you see a sign on a wall in a public place, the spanish translation is always next to it..shouldn't we be more rigid on making them learn english. i realize that in about 50 years, mexicans will be the majority in america, but if we can make them learn english now, wouldn't it be easier fo all americans to co-exist.

Did you know new immigrants from all over the world have a much more difficult time assimilating? Its their children and later generations who ALWAYS assimilate......Its very difficult learning a new language, but that doesn't mean later generations will NOT learn the language and culture....

Way too easy. They aren't that accomodating for people who speak other languages. From the bi-lingual doo-da in public schools to press 1 for English or must speak Spanish to get a job. I'm sick of it. As long as there isn't a real push to get them to speak English, they never will. There's people here for YEARS and don't speak it. They pretty much isolate themselves into their communities where they all speak Spanish, their children learn English to a degree but I don't think on a whole they do as well as those who aren't catered too because they only use it in school and go back to Spanish with their friends and family. It is the absolute least they can do to assimilate here. If someone can come from China and learn the language when they have to learn the ABC's and everything else totally different than what they have known.......there's no excuse these guys can't. They just won't and that's where the problem lies. I know it's not ALL but it's enough to cause a huge divide. There's free classes etc. People from other countries said that one of the big ways that helped them learn the language was TV., radio and music. Well, they have their own TV and radio stations and their own music so there's no incentive at all to learn it. Libraries are starting to stock books in Spanish. Newspapers in Spanish. Everything to cater and nothing to push them to learn English.

Yes you are right and is wrong. The government is always complaining about the Hispanics in the USA not learning English or assimilating into our culture and then ,they start giving them everything in Spanish. I think we the Americans are the ones to blame for that irrational way. I don't think that in 50 years the Mexicans will control the USA,, never. never. I do agreed with you we the Americans are too soft with this issue of the illegal immigration.

I find it really hard to believe that we do so much to pick up the slack for those people. I hate having to hear everything repeated in Spanish when I call a company. Every other cultural immigrant has to learn the English language. I know for a fact that a majority of Mexicans in the southwest think that this was their country. I actually heard one say that when Columbus came here the entire continent was known as Mexico. It's crazy.

Yes, we have made it very accomodating in general. The Spanish does not bother me, as I understand enough to function quite well, however, it is the basic principle behind them learning MY language in order to be here. I also disagree that hispanics will be a majority in the U.S, just based on my own experiences.
I believe that the biggest jump in population demographics will be in the mixed race population. I live in a border town and a good chunk of hispanic people seem to marry other races than their own. So in effect, what they really seem to be doing is diversifying the gene pool a little bit. Nothing wrong with that.

Well see, this is how it has always been done. My great grandparents came here from Italy at a pivotal time in American history. They did it legally (as to the standards at that time) AND they learned English. They learned English not because they were made to learn it BUT because it was a NECESSITY to learn it.

Yes...I believe there are some folks in this country who are bending over backwards to accommodate foreigners. I feel that this is in turn causing too much confusion and lowering the standard.

Couldn't agree with you more. When other folks immigrated to America I don't believe that we put up signs in German, French or Italian or Swedish or Danish. So why are we putting up signs in Mexican Spanish?

We are also requiring schools, hospitals, governmental offices to hire folks who speak Mexican Spanish. If we keep up with this it won't be long, and it might already be too late, before we will be like Quebec where both languages will be require officially.

One country, one language.

Anyone who comes to America should at the very least learn English. Why should they continue to stick to their old language in a new country. If you want to have everything in spanish go back to mexico. We speak English in America and so should anyone who wants to "assimilate"

I hope nobody takes this the wrong way, but if the majority of illegals were white I don't think we'd be so accommodating. I think this is being done to prove that we aren't racist. Why do you think they use the race card so much? It gets them many special privileges. They don't have to assimilate as long as we accommodate. This needs to stop.

Absolutely- if everyone in America when faced with the situation of having to decipher what someone is saying because they can't speak English- looked at them blankly and said- no hablais (sp?)espanol- perhaps they would get the idea.
Quite frankly, If you can't speak to me in English in America- I don't care what you have to say.

Did you hear- I agree completely- you don't see us offering instruction in Russian do you?
