The importance of smoking is that nicotine is a strong poisonous pesticide that is addictive. Nicotine is the substance in tobacco that causes addiction. The addiction tricks your brain into thinking it feels good to smoke, even as the smoke is killing you.

It is my right and I try to not condemn those that do not smoke except to say eat right, exercise and die anyway. I find that smokers have a better personality and easier to talk to. I get pretty angry when people are pushing their ideas and beliefs in my direction. If you don't want to smell my smoke hold your breath like forever! It is amazing how many people are closet smokers, the ones that don't smoke in front of you but see them in their cars smoking. We are not second class citizens and the hype on second hand smoke is a bunch of bull. Smoking, to me is sexy and nothing is sexier than a lady lighting a cigarette. Where there's smoke there fire!

Smoking is the cost effective way for people who cannot afford an expensive suicide to kill themselves. It's an installment plan that lets them do it little by little rather than struggling to come up with one large, lump sum for something like jumping from a plane with no parachute at 30,000 feet. Plus, ingesting poison makes you look really cool.

This is an excerpt from the link below. It pretty much details the importance of tobacco on the economy:
Tobacco has always been an important part of North Carolina's economy and a vital crop to our producers. Many people raised in this state can find a heritage relating to some area of the tobacco industry. The golden leaf is a bedrock to North Carolina.
The Tarheel state continues to rank number one in the production of tobacco with an approximate 2004 annual farm income of $587.8 million dollars. In 2004, North Carolina flue-cured tobacco farmers raised 151,400 acres with an average yield of 2,258 lbs. per acre. Burley tobacco farmers in the state raised 5,300 acres for an average yield of 1,450 lbs. per acre. There are approximately 286,500 tobacco farms with assigned quota in the United States with North Carolina having approximately 40,829 tobacco farms with quota.
According to the 2002 census there are 56,977 tobacco farmers in the United States and 7,850 tobacco farmers in North Carolina. Employment relating to tobacco is 662,400 in the United States and 255,000 in North Carolina. The tobacco industry's estimated spending-induced impact on America's GNP was over $64.0 billion. North Carolina's tobacco economic impact is over $7.0 billion.

all your system has problems, your heart is bitting faster, you have a bad smell, and your skin gets older sooner than of a non smoker. Someone told me once (when I was smoking) "When I see you smoke, it's like watching the parthenon full of fog."

To most smokers I think the importance to them would be the calming effect it has on their nerves (at least for most smokers I know). I often think of quitting, but I am afraid I would go to pieces if I do.

It destresses you. It always calms me and helps me to concentrate. I have ADHD, and sometimes being calm and collected can be hard, smoking helps me beable to do that.
