There are a number of reasons in my opinion:

Escapism; from reality, poverty, difficult situations, bleak prospects, breavement or depression.

Addiction; I dare say if you ask anyone addicted to drugs (whether that be alcohol, tobacco, cocaine or heoin) "is it easy to stop?" Most people with addictions struggle to beat that addiction, wheher physical or mental.

Peer Pressure; for many young users of drugs the main reason they started taking drugs was becasue their friends were doing it. For most it ends there, but unfortunatley they can then move to either of the two points noted above.

Usually, it starts out as a crutch, a way to get away from their problems or pain or the world even. After a while of course, it becomes an addiction where the person can no longer function without them. A lot of people have crutches to make it through the day, and not all of them turn to drugs or alcohol. People that chain smoke, or bite their nails, that sort of thing that seems to be like a stress reliever is actually a crutch. The difference is most people aren't actually addicted to those (except the cigarettes), and can still function whether they do it or not. That's the problem with drugs, they get you hooked and make you think you can't live without them.

If by drugs you mean hallucinogenics and things like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, et cetera, there are several reasons.

First and foremost, to escape and/or relax. Lighting up a joint of marijuana will make you super mellow. LSD makes colors brighter and music better. You can get a rush of energy and feel great while you're high. The disadvantages are that it kills off your brain cells, is very expensive and you can end up thinking you can fly, jumping out your window and finding out the truth the hard way.

Nobody sets out wanting to get addicted, but things today are much more powerful than they were 30 years ago, and you never know what's been cut in to the drugs to increase the weight and experience. Also, many people are 16 when they start and think they're strong enough to not get addicted. The negative effects outweigh the good by far; it's better to stay away all together.

I have taken drugs in the past because because they temporarily make all of my problems go away. I am happy, not worried, and a very patient wonderful person when I am on drugs. But drugs run out and then you are left with a very serious addiction and some huge financial problems. My family has lots of alcoholics but I was the first drug addict. I really think that drugs are a horrible disease. It is so hard to understand for those who have not been there. Sad yes. A crime I am not so sure of that.

Do you mean street drugs or Psychiatric drugs?

Street there are several reasons, attention, illnesses like Depression and ADHD. some are forced to, some think it is cool, some are influenced in bad ways, some just hate themselves.

Psychiatric - If you have suffered and are you know how it feels. Sometimes you just want to get a prescription and give it a go. there is also forced Psychiatric drugging which you can read more about on www.cchr.com

Recreational or perscription? I believe people take recreational drugs to escape problems that they are dealing with, at least that is true for me. I take my perscription drugs because the doctors said they are supposed to help me, recreational drugs seem to be doing the better job though.

it depends. some take it when they are deeply depressed or they are forced to take it by someone. peer pressure. they see others taking it so they take it themselves. its wrong and it ruins your whole life. i attended a workshop with the same topic. thats how i learned all this
