An air compressor is a machine, usually made up of a piston connected to a crankshaft and moving in a valved cylinder (a mechanism similar to a piston engine), that takes in atmospheric air and compresses it to a higher pressure. The output, compressed air, may be stored in a pressure tank or may be used directly in air tools, dust-removal nozzles, paint sprayers, or to inflate tires (among many other uses). The compressor requires a source of mechanical power to operate. Probably the most-used type is a unit consisting of electric motor, compressor and tank with pressure gauge. See the ref. for a description of how they work.
