Buy the book if you're really interested in doing it. It's got a section that tells you all of the sorts of things that you can eat that you probably thought you couldn't. For instance, in the second and third stages you can have whipped cream and in the third you can have berries.

But for the sake of just answering the question, here's a list. (This isn't all of the foods, only the things I can think of off the top of my head.)

Most nuts, peanut butter, beef, poultry, fish, pork (no honeyed ham, there's sugar in it) eggs (I think 3 equals 1 carb so go nuts) cheeses, vegetables... etc.

The only thing you can't have is sugar. That means for the most part no fruit and certainly no candy or things like that. Milk is okay in the later stages but it's best if you can find a low carb alternate which is actually very good. No bread or pastas.

There are alternatives on the market for the things that you're going to miss. They sell low carb pasta and breads. It's best if you can get used to pitas instead of loaves of bread though because they're much lower in carbs and low carb bread isn't very good. They also make low carb ice cream and candy. Sugar free candy is best. There's plenty of tasty gums out there already suger free. Careful with sugar free candies and even low carb candies however. Read the packaging. Most contain malitol which is not good for most peoples digestion systems. It'll make you sick... (And that's as much detail as I'll go into.)

I highly recommed the book if you're truly interested. It gives you all sorts of ideas. Even if you don't want to read the part about how your body is going to react and such. (Which you should just for the informative bit and to know what's going to happen to your body and when.) I personally have used this diet and lost over 60 pounds. Be careful with it, if you're going to do it, you should do it right otherwise you could really hurt yourself. Yes, you could actually lose a lot of weight eating just pork rinds and slim jims on this diet. (Really!) But it's not healthy at all. You still need a well balanced diet. Veggies, lean meats and cheeses should make up the bulk of your diet. It's not all bad. I mean, when's the last time you went on a diet and could eat a cheeseburger? (Uh, minus the bun of course.)

Oh, which reminds me, most all spices and condiments are definitely on the list of foods you can eat. Ranch dressing is naturally very low in carbs. Also mustard (not ketchup), mayonaisse, pickles, dill relish (not sweet) these are all fine. So a hot dog, no bun, relish and mustard is just fine. Same with a salad with cucumbers and green peppers with ranch dressing. It's about accessorizing your meal!

My husband has just started the Atkins diet. You can eat as much meat as you like as long as you don't mix with carbs.
Bacon
Sausages
Any meat
No fruit
Check it out on the net, or read Dr Atkins New diet revolution, by the doctor himself

Eggs, cheese, butter, meat, fish, cream, a little salad with full fat mayo, vegetables but not potatoes. Just green veg for first two weeks.

So you could have bacon and eggs for breakfast.

small salad with tuna or ham (as much meat or fish as you like but only a cup of salad )and real mayo for lunch and a baked egg. (get a small ramekin dish put a blob of butter in bottom crack an egg on top of it top with grated cheese and a dash of salt and pepper. Place dish in another larger oven proof dish containing water and bake in oven for about ten minutes. yum!!)

For dinner you could have beef or chicken. with cabbage and broccoli.

In between you can put a slice of turkey on to a lettuce leaf add a
little mayo and roll up like a cigar. Eat two per snack.

You can have a stick of cheese as a snack too.

After first two weeks you can add fruit in just an apple a day.

You must avoid pasta, bread, potatoes, rice and all starches.

Drink lots of water and take vitamins.

You really need to get the Atkins book from the library. It has recipes in it and tells you all about the vitamins.
If you feel poorly on it then do not continue. It does not suit everyone.

All the answers above mine are right--about all the HIGH-FAT meats you can eat. This diet is just one that can become a risk factor and lead to heart disease later in life. The saturated fats raise cholesterol and raise fat, making you at higher risk for heart disease & obesity.

Carbohydrates get a bad rap! They aren't bad for you! In fact, the average human (man or woman) needs a MINIMUM of 130g per day. The key is: eat HEALTHIER complex carbs. The South Beach Diet allows you carbs and fats--but it helps you eat the 'good' (complex) carbs and the good (mono and poly-unsaturated) fats. I would definitely not recommend the Atkins due to its detrimental effects later in life.

I don't usually give advice where it's not asked for but think again about Atkins. You lose weight because the body starts to eat itself!! It's so dangerous and makes your breath reek.
