What you are really attending is commercial. They are letting you try their wines because they hope you will buy them. They might have the best wines out there or the worst there ever were. You won't know for your self unless you taste them. You don't gulp down wine, you sip it. When you first try your sample, just take a small amount. Unless the wine is really bad, there should be no need to spit it out in front of everyone. I would drink this first sip. If you don't want to finish the glass - there will be a bucket provided and all you have to do is dump the contents of your glass in it and try the next one. Incidently, there is no harm in asking for another sample of a type of wine that you DO like.

In a wine tasting session, it is cool to spit out the wine you're tasting. However, when coming across a really good wine, like something expensive, recoup the cost of your session by drinking down the expensive wine. Don't let that wine go to waste!

follow these steps:
1. look at it - check if the wine has no solid elements floating around. then check if the wine is of the right color for its type and age.
-young wine (1 to 2 years old) is usually pale straw color with tinge of green around the rim
-as white wine gets older it becomes yellower in color
- then golden
- and when it is old, brown.
red wine is usually deep crimson with purple tinge
-then turns brick red
-when really old, it turns brown.
2. Nose it. Life the glass, swirl the wine around, to release the aroma, put your nose over the top of the glass and take one short sniff. Try to distinguish that it doesnt smell like:
-corked wine
-vinegar
-rotten eggs
-or sulphur.
3. Taste it. you can drink it. Take a generous sip and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds. If you are in a wine tasting session, you can spit it out. Swallow it when you are in a restaurant.

At meals you swallow, at tastings you spit (unless the wines being tasted are liquid gold; it would be criminal to cough up even a drop of the 1989 Haut-Brion, for instance)
But as with so many other wine-related rituals, spitting is no simple matter. Proper technique and correct form count for a lot more than you might think in wine circles - read the link below for a proper guide on how to spit.

Depends how many wines to taste. If only 6 or so then drink it down. If a bit more than you are used to then spit the ones you don't like - just don't gargle with it !!

I guess it just depends on how 'posh' or serious the session is. Personally I would swallow, especially if I was paying. Just don't try swallowing for most of the evening and then starting to spit - it's bloody difficult to hit the spitoon when you are seeing double!!! Hope it's a good session.

Whatever you pay for, food or otherwise, may not always really taste good. Taste, not good, spit. Taste, good, swallow. Thats that simple.

I'd only spit it out if I got one that I didn't like the taste of. Is the usual manner not to swish it round your mouth and then spit it back into your glass thou? You could always drink it up again after you spit!!

Don't drink it all, you will hate yourself in the morning. True wine tasting is about tasting the wine itself, not ingesting it. You get your monies worth by being able to taste the wines, no catching a buzz.

Its all based on your preference. Is it a good wine, is it an awful taste? No one will be offended if you spit it out. Just be tactful if you do. Make sure to rinse your pallet before trying a new wine.
