Acting like you are superior to others, this is usually religion-related, but at I think that all "pompous" individuals are also self-righteous. If the shoe fits, only you know if you are guilty of it, are you "full of yourself"? Then yes. Lets try not to be that way, it is ugly!

Phil 3:9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith. This scripture defines self-righteousness as the righteousness we try to earn by obeying the law (the Old Covenant) or in other words righteousness by works. It also states that we have the righteousness of God by faith when we received Jesus as our Lord and Savior or in other words a righteousness we receive by grace through faith.
The problem is that nobody can obey the law fully and therefore self-righteousness cannot be attained. So Jesus had to die on the cross to fulfill the law and by His death we have God's righteousness imputed to us by faith - 2 Cor 5:21. What all this means is that we cannot meet God by our own obedience to the law but by believing in Jesus we now have God's righteousness in us to meet God. Just come to God believing you are righteousness is all God requires for us to approach His throne of grace.

Since this question is in R&S, an example would be anyone who has the nerve to tell someone else that their religious/spiritual belief is flat out wrong. I may have just been guilty of it by assuming that no one could possibly know what is "correct".

I believe self righteousness stems from the idea that we can make our self sinless or our good works is enough to save us. That is why we need to be humble and go to Jesus to change our sinful lives.

Behaving as though one is morally superior to others, looking down on them for not living up to ones moral standards.
Whether one is technically right or not behaving in this manner is obnoxious.
Most people do indeed indulge in this behavior on occasion, I know I do.

You're being self righteous if you slap someone on the face or hit them then tell him/her what to do.

Pointing the finger at others, and talking about them, so we don't have to
take an honest look at our own short-comings!
