What do you want to know?

You have to heat it beyond a critical temperature, then quench it (cool it fast enough) to harden it. Then you have to temper it (reheat to a lower temperature and slowly cool it) because it will be too brittle when hard.

1045 has no alloy in it, so thicker cross sections will not quench fast enough to get through-hardening. Avoid thick sections, or switch to an alloy steel (41XX or 43XX) in order to accomplish through-hardening.
