Planes - plenty of planes from BKK to ChgMai. You have to go to the airport of course - which means time to check in, check out etc, then get into ChgMai when you arrive.
Bus and train - again, plenty of services available at different prices. Remember - you get what you pay for.

Personally - I would suggest the train. Go first class sleeper or at least first class. Anything other class and you will regret it.

I have taken a plane, the train overnight in a private room and also in a berth. For the small price difference the room is worth it but both ways were fine. I highly recommend the overnight train to Chiang Mai or vice versa to Bangkok - a pleasant ride with good food & good service.

I think the best way to travel is overnight train - that way you dont have to pay for accomodation that night and you are not wasting any time travelling. Go to the main station in Bangkok - easy to book trains anywhere and you do not need to leave that much notice.

Enjoy, Chaing Mai is amazing!

If you are really short on cash, there's no problem with buses or getting a train. Normally I fly as its pretty cheap, like about US$40, to get a flight using www.airasia.com if you book at least a month in advance.
