Hello! My puppy has effectively learned how to use his litter box whenever he needs to go to the bathroom. He knows that he will receive food treats for his behavior. However, we are trying to get him to stop expecting food every time and just get used to using the litter box without receiving dog treat rewards. WHAT should we do to transition him from expecting food to nothing at all? Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated!

Start giving him attention or playing w. a special toy after using the box. Sometimes give him lots of attention and play, and sometimes give him treats. Then he doesn't expect it all the time. Eventually you can wean him away from the treats.

Just slowly take him off the treats. Maybe give him one every other time that he goes. Or offer a favorite toy instead of treats. It's just the same as weaning him off of treats when he has learned how to sit or stay.

it is good to see you have your pet using a litter box but to do one better and wean out the treats try pulling the box closer and closer to the door so eventually your pet will need to go to the box outside the door. when he achieves this then, it is easy to slowely stop the treats. just give every second time until you have weaned them out all together. your pet sounds very clever so i think this wont take long to learn.

Neither. You should be crate training your dog. Get a cage or crate and up untill the dog is completely potty trained he should be in that cage or crate at all times unless you have 100% attention on him. You cant let him wander around the house free untill he is trained. Make sure the crate is only big enough to stretch out in. Dogs naturally dont like to potty where they sleep. Everytime you let him out take him directly outside so he knows thats the first place he will go. This method works really well and seems to be the easiest to accomplish. Good Luck

start putting the litter box outside dogs are suppose to pea on lawns and trees not in the litter box. so now get him used to crying when he needs to go to the bathroom let him out and when he peas give him his treat. then take the litter box away and get him to pee outside and give him a treat. when he does it without a slip up just stop giving him treats all together he will get the drift

You've got a *dog* that uses a *litter box*?? Dang, you're good! Start giving him treats every other time, and praise and love only other times. slowly decrease the treats and increase the praise. Dogs want to please us.
