I do not like the idea of putting my dog to sleep. She was attacked 4 months ago. The vet had to operate on her leg. They said if it did not work they would have to amputate. Well, i woke up this morning with her yelling and crying. Her leg is crooked again. I am taking her to the surgical clinic now. I know what they are going to say.
WHAT IS FAIR - AMPUTATE (WE HAVE THREE OTHER DOGS, ALL POMS) AND HAVE HER LAG BEHIND NOT TO MENTION IT SOUNDS CRUEL OR PUT HER DOWN - WHICH ALSO SOUNDS CRUEL???? HELP PLEASE

I love my dogs so much. They r my children. I cannot afford to go to the doctor myself, but I take them to the vet. I do not have the money for the amputation, but if it's the right thing to do I will get it. (I did her other surgery - $2,500) People called me stupid for that, but that's what I had to do

I have rescued tripods and the last one a beagle you couldn't even tell she didn't have a leg. She was a wild woman running with all my big dogs. Under foot running circles around my legs.
If you amputate she will get acclimated to her situation and still be there wagging her tail and loving on you. Don't let the thought of her lagging behind fool you.
We have a puppy right now that may have to have his front leg amputated. He is still growing and the vets aren't sure if his leg will hold his weight once he is full grown. He has already had surgery but it didn't work. We pulled him out of a shelter to save him and we will not put him to sleep because he needs a leg amputated. This is just a mutt we rescued yours is your companion do not euthanize your dog for this.

Dogs and cats do still have good lives with just 3 legs. It really depends on the age of the dog and whether she is in general good health. Only you can decide. If she is a young dog then I would go for the amputation, personally.

Well it sounds like you dog is young just go ahead and amputate the leg i would say put her down if she was like 12 or so but she still has a long life a head of her. So dont end it now. As long as she wont be in any pain when it all heals up then you shouldnt put her down. welp good luck on your doggie hope she gets better soon....

I am really sorry about your dog. Its so hard to see a dog, who gives so much love, have pain. I wanted to tell you about my kids dog. She is a little Boston Terrier, now 12 years old. Six years ago she was hit by a car. She badly injured her front leg. It had to be amputated. It never slowed her down a bit! She still runs as fast and jumps and keeps up with their other dog with no problem. I would give her a chance. Dogs have a great resilience. I bet you will be surprised! Give her a hug for me and good luck!

Take the leg off. She is still young, so healing time will be quick and you will be amazed at how quickly she adjusts to being 3 legged - she won't be lagging behind for long. Also, you will probably find the other 3 will be extra caring with her - dogs are pack animals after all. Good luck, keep your chin up, she will be fine

In a dog that young she will be fine with the amputation. Now if you would have said she was ten or more I would have said put her down. She will adjust and wont lag behind. You will be surprised she may become the leader? Good Luck!

If it was you, what would you want? Dogs are perfectly capable of adjusting to having 3 legs, especially if they are still young. What would your dog want, given the choice of loosing a leg and being euthanized? Your dog is a family member, dont forget that. Talk to your vet before deciding. Will your dog be painfree after recovery? How your dog cope until now with use of only 3 legs?
If there is a good chance of speedy recovery and a life without suffering afterwards, i would give him the chance.

Many dogs live a full and happy life with three legs. Once she is healed she will not lag behind, and the great thing about dogs is they are not self centered like people, so she will not feel sorry for herself. I would amputate. You are the ideal pet owner, go ahead and smirk when people call you stupid for taking care of your pet, and know that these are the people who should not be pet owners:)

I would hear what the vet has to say, and how will the dog be, if it's amputated. Lots of dogs have been altered and enjoy a wonderful life. Good Luck!

People don't understand what dogs mean to people. You are note stupid for loving your animals. I have seen lots of three legged dogs out there that do just fine. Get around just as easily and quick as there 4 legged counterparts. UNless there is worry about an infection or can never get out of pain I would not put her down.
