I saw a guy at the airport getting a good deal on a flight. He checked some weird site and found the best deal on the site. The airline was offering the seat on that weird site. Only letters, no nice web page.

You may be talking about airhitch.org. A word of caution... you can definitely get some good deals but you have to be prepared to travel last minute, possibly spend entire days in the airport, and have extremely flexible travel plans. Basically they contract for excess seats on flights, especially overseas flights, and you buy their service of placing you on what would be an otherwise empty seat. But since the airlines will wait till the last minute to declare a seat empty and sell it to Airhitch, you might not know till 20 minutes before the flight that you will indeed be on it.

Apart from that, last-minute deals pretty much went the way of the dinosaur on 9/11. The added security screenings and banning of non-ticketed persons in the departure zones means no more flying stand-by day of flight. You can still get a day of flight ticket but you'll usually have to get it from the airline, and that's the most expensive day to buy a ticket from them! I'm not saying don't look around, only don't plan your vacation on getting a last-minute cheap ticket.

Well working for an airlines there are two ways. You can buy in advance on the web at the discount airline sites, but make sure you always call the airline first to get a price to compare those with. Second, its the time frame in advance that you buy your ticket. 3 weeks, to 3 months can sometimes cut the ticket in half, and depending upon the day of the year that you are flying (non holidays or peak loads) you can sometimes get awesome deals. Often if you just walk up to the counter and the same day want to buy a ticket to some place, you can get a deal on it. If you are in no hurry, and its only hours away from the flight leaving, sometimes they drop their ticket price down to try and fill those last seats, rather than flying a revenue mile with an empty seat. Airlines make money off of revenue miles. Some seats on the plane make 2x's the money for mile than others, why? Because it is all a convience factor to the person we are provideing a service for. If we cant plan on that seat being sold, then so many days away from the flight leaving the ticket prices actually start to increase to make up for the ammount of seats open on that flight. As far as the best website, I'd constanty check them all. Its more about the time of day you are flying and the date of leaving and return. My tickets are cheap enough, so I dont know of any sites, besides the normal priceline.com and doing a google search for discount airfares would probably land you about 10,000 sites that wanna help u. Have a nice day.
