Anti depressants are not working for my Post Natal Depression, can I take St.Johns Wort or any other herbal medicines to help? What affect would these have on my breast feeding?

Not advisable ! As you know St John's Wort is an alternative to prescribed anti depressants and when taken it can seriously interact with other prescribed drugs to the point of decreasing their effectiveness.
Potentially the side effects of the herb are mild and variable e.g. stomach upset, skin rashes and mental confusion. I'm sure you wouldn't want any of these at this important time.
There are many types of prescribable anti depressants and they don't all work in the same way so maybe it's worth asking to try a different one.

I had the same concern and giving him a dummy used to be heaven! I'm selective about giving it to him although (no longer just for the sake of it) and he enjoys it. The first dummy I gave him, he completely rejected despite the fact that it used to be an high-priced orthadontic one! The one he prefers is a giant bulb one so even though your baby does not take to a dummy at first, might be you might are attempting extraordinary types.I'm a nursery nurse with the aid of profession and had quite a lot of experience with toddlers and its nice to try this. This is any such original difficulty and most mums use a dummy. Hope this helps.

Thomas Hale, RPh, PhD, author of Medications and Mothers' Milk, says that St. John's Wort appears to be relatively safe for nursing mothers, but recommends that caution be used. He suggests that other treatments (Zoloft, Paxil) are probably preferred.

If you want to try something herbal before resorting to prescription meds, Evening Primrose Oil capsules are reported to be quite helpful for postpartum depression, and are considered to be safe for breastfeeding moms. Other herbs that can be helpful for postpartum depression are motherwort and blessed thistle.

Have you tried taking a good multivitamin? PND can be the result of a zinc or other nutritional deficiencies.
I'm not sure about using St John's Wort while breastfeeding. It is unlikely to have been tested, so probably no one is sure.

You had better check with your doctor before changing anything, or taking anything herbal. Don't stop prescribed medication without checking with him or her.
