My friend seems to be falling into...decay. Since her oldest daughter returned home her standards have really dived. They have a feral pig which someone caught hunting and it is sleeping in the bed with the girls. It poops in the bed even. They think this is cute. We think its gross. It is the law in australia that we kill feral animals, not make them pets, due to diseases etc. I have kept my mouth shut, but this really is horrible. This is an urban home, not a farm. Should I just say nothing?

Its illegal to keep a feral pig as a pet - so they can't get shots from a vet.

Having the pig in bed and it pooping in the bed is gross.
That alone could cause the children to become sick.
This is a moral dilemma, do you call it in and take the pig away from the children or do you let time catch up with them.
If it were me, I wouldn't call it in, I would just wait and see what happens.
Good Luck with you decision.

You are obligated to report this. They are jeopardizing their own health, as well as a lot of other people who never got a vote on this! In an urban area. Who knows what diseases can be caught from feces of a wild animal? Some may not show up for years!
We are talking bacterial, fungal, swine flu and who knows what viruses! What if some are contagious? How would you feel of a child was sickened? Go to the authorities & ask to remain anonymous, but go!

I don't know exactly what the governmental organization is called in Australia, but in the US we have the Division of Child and Family Services, which is responsible for making sure that children are properly taken care of. I would think that them living in unsanitary conditions like this would be grounds for you to call the authorities and have them look in on the family. Certainly a slide in standards like you have indicated may be a sign that the mother is having problems with her mental health, and the government people might help with that too. But as a caring friend you might encourage her to seek help, too.

I don't even believe in having dogs or cats in the bed, let alone pigs. Report them - the children shouldn't be in those kind of conditions.

A lot of people keep pigs as pets....

Make them go give it the proper shots and vacinations.
