I admire this girl in my class and doesn't this mean that I have a crush on her? I'm confused because the word "secret admirer" has to deal with "crush".

You can admire somebody without having a crush on them so they do not have the same meaning. To me the word crush implies that you do not know that person very well, which fits in with your feeling that it has some connection to "secret admirer."Once you get to know a person you don't have a crush on them.

In modern English, to admire is to respect without wanting a sexual relationship.
You can admire men and women.

To have a 'crush' on someone means you want to pursue a romantic relationship.
'Secret admirer' is an old-fashioned term for 'crush'.

Admiring someone does not necessarily mean you have a crush on the person, if you admire the person in the sense that you like that person and are attracted to her then its a crush but if you just respect her coz of she is a good person or wateva it might not be a crush.

I think perhaps you should look less at the words and more at your meaning.

You could admire her work ethic, personality, fashion sense, opinions, stunning posterior or whatever, but a crush is a crush. "Admire" has multiple meanings, so look 'em up if you'd like to pass the time with research.

I don't know; DO you have a crush on her? That's for you to decide.

if you wanna get technical.....

in this context, admire is a verb. as in you admire her.

crush is a noun. as in you might have a crush on her.

so they're not the same word. but if you admire her, i would say you also have a crush on her.
