Get the dog to a vet. He could have had a stroke and it could be time to make that decision. Not eating, even for a day, in a dog that age is bad. If he stops taking in water, it's really bad. Get to a vet and fast. He's too old to withstand very much in the way of illness.

Is he in pain or suffering discomfort?
Is he not eating at all, or just "Not eating very much these days"!?
As you must be aware, 17 in dog years is a "damn fine innings."
It is a difficult and emotional decision, and at 17, he has obviously had a wonderful life, my heart goes out to you.

Take dog to vet and stay with it. Your vet will know what to do. If they feel it is time, say Good Bye and hold it as it passes on. It will bring your dog comfort to have you there. Sorry, that's a long time to have a good friend and lose it. God Bless you both.

ask yourself, what quality of life does he have. Would you like to live like that. He probably won't last long anyway if not eating. Talk to the vet. MAke sure it is nothing medical. Then do what is fair. As sad as it is and as much as I hate to say it, he has lived a long life, it is probably about time.

from personal experience I have found that my dogs can "tell me" when the time has come, you can see it in their eyes, and I'd much rather let the vet relive him of his pain than let him suffer, take him to the vet and hold him until its over, not only does this provide a closing for you, this way he goes in the arms of a loved one and it is far better than finding him dead in his bed knowing he died alone. Bless you and your old friend.

I same thing happened to my dog, at 19 yr old. Go to your vet. Take the dog, let him/her see the dog and talk to you about the dog's condition. Hear what the doc has to say----think-----then decide. I acted on it right away.

i think you should ,17 years is a very good innings ,he sounds like a fine senior citezen that lived life to the full . in the long run it would be kinder to let him die with painless dignity , i would rather that happened to me than not being able to eat & be disorientated.
most vet's are understanding & are good for a shoulder to cry on , i know vets that would cry with you , that's why they're there , they love animals.
cheers:
paul :-}

To safe guard your dog from suffering I would strongly suggest puppy him to sleep.

Blessings with your choice.

Get the dog to your vet. It could be many things, diabetes, stroke if there is weakness on one side more than another...really should see your vet.

It is old age. Poor thing. Yes, help him to finally rest; after all you don´t want him to suffer, right?
