Are they fattening?

California rolls usually contain cucumber, crab/imitation crab stick and avocado, and are often made "inside out" with the seaweed on the inside instead of the outside, so the outer layer is rice, often coated with sesame seeds.

They were originally invented as a variation on standard sushi to suit american tastes & to substitute ingredients which are easier to obtain in america.

They shouldn't be very fattening, as the only really fattening ingredients are the avocado & crab sticks, which are in quite small quantities, so you would have to eat quite a lot of california rolls before you need to worry too much! Occasionally there is mayonaise mixed with the imitation crab, but still only small quantities.

Actually, they should be fairly good for you, since avocado contains "good fats" & lots of other nutritious things, and seaweed contains various important nutrients too. White rice doesn't have a lot of nutritional value, and probably isn't so great if you are watching the "glycemic index" (GI) of the food you eat, but it's not too bad. Apart from that, there's a small amount of sugar, vinegar & salt mixed with the rice, but not enough to make them unhealthy.

Whether they are good or not comes down to personal taste, but they are very popular, and are a more "approachable" type of sushi for people who aren't sure if they would like it. I'm vegetarian so I've never tried them, but I like the same kind of sushi minus the crab!

I've had some Californian rolls in NYC, and they were good cause they've got avacados in them. I don't think they are fattening as they are all veggies. You want to hear other opinions though.
