Just going through the craigslist postings - If I am looking for a room in the 10011 zip code area, would that fall under West Village, Chelsea, or Greenwich Village? Also, it seems as though there is some overlap between these areas. Are there clearly defined boundaries, or is it loosely defined?

That zip code falls in all three neighborhoods plus it's an odd shape. The bulk of it being north of W 14th St. in Chelsea (but below 24th even though Chelsea runs even further north) with the smaller portion below 14th being split between small areas of the West Village (west of 6th Ave) and Greenwich Village (east of 6th Ave). As far as I know, the neighborhoods are roughly defined when it comes to some boundary lines and it doesn't go by zip code. 14th St and 6th Ave are more definite boundary lines in the part of town you're talking about.

Why on Earth would anyone suggest Harlem to live in? Are you from a 1920s time warp? Washington Heights, Morningside Heights, Inwood, and maybe the Lower East Side are the only safe and possibly affordable neighborhoods in Manhattan. Try Kingsbridge or Parkchester in the Bronx, Flatbush, Marine Park or Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, Kew Gardens, Yellowstone, Astoria, Sunnyside, Corona or Bayside in Queens. Or much of Staten Island.
