My cat is about 14 (got her from cat rescue, they weren't sure of age), I've had her since 18 months old. She has recently changed her behaviour and I don't know why. She runs from place to place and suddenly refuses to sit in normal places(always has until now) she has to sit under the desk on the shelf or on top of something. When she is outside(rarely) at the front door wanting food, I open the door and she just miaows and looks through the door cautiously as though there might be something scary in the house. It takes a lot of coaxing to get her in. She eats her food then flits to the nearest weird place to sit, if I put her on the sofa she immediately jumps off. This has started a couple of weeks ago and she's getting stranger by the day. I know she's getting on in age but she's still very agile and doesn't look old at all. The whole family have noticed and don't know why she's being like this.
Any advice on weird behaviour in cats gratefully received.

Hi there...at 14 her body is changing and it certainly wouldn't hurt to consider having her get a medical evaluation to be sure there isn't any underlying/hidden medical problems.

I'm assuming she's fixed, but if not, she could be in heat. Cats can act psycho when in heat. I have an older cat who also goes thru phases of 'weird activity'. I've given up trying to figure her out, maybe it has to do with a full moon or something. If your cat goes outside at all, there could be a new pet/dog in the neighborhood that's freaking her out. Cats are like people, they have different moods, they sense things in the atmosphere, as long as she doesn't appear sick, give her some time. Also, the whole sitting down and flitting around thing...could be worms.

Any young family members that aren't kind/gentle to kitties? Watch how other people interact with her. Any other pets, do the same? If that turns up nothing, try comfort zone with feliway--it calms cats and is totally safe (can get it online) buy a diffuser and see if it has any effect. If you try the feliway spray , be sure to read the instructions and do NOT spray it ON the cat.Talk to your vet to make sure she is okay, also. Sounds like she is scared of someone or something though--good luck with the detective work!

cats act weird when they are uncomfortable with their surroundings. perhaps you have changed something that she doesn't like, if not, then she is just getting older. the older the cat gets the more stressed out they can be, animals are like humans the have similar habits. If its not that, maybe she is traumatized, i know you have had her for a while, but some cats only react to their feelings in a slower process then humans.

She's old and going thru the change. Leave her alone.
