Society is based upon certain rules, customs and nuances. While many can blissfully get by without having to worry about manners, it does matter to many people. Opinions, emotions and feelings are generated every day, in split second decisions - and bad manners can be a sure fire way to strong negative reaction.

So, no, manners are not a waste of time so long as you deal with people. In fact, manners can help you out when you least expect them and assuage difficult situations - whether it is getting a discount at the bakery because you are nice, to buying a house, to getting a job, to getting the benefit of the doubt, to many other things.

This isn't to say that you need to be Ms./Mr. Manners, but common courtesy goes a long way. Thank you for your patience in listening to me ramble.

Good manners are never a waste of time. Be polite to everybody you deal with and you will find that most people will do the same. When some people refuse to do so, don't take it personally, they might not have been taught good manners, but if they are exposed to them enough, some might rub off on them.
My father used to joke about manners. He said that his were excellent because he never used them and wore them out : )

Good manners are not a waste of time. You need good manners to gain respect in society. Imagine if someone kept shouting rude words at you all the time. Would you like that?
