I agree if we gave all the money to charities for the poor or third world it would make much more sense.
saying that there have been times when my children were given clothes or a coat for christmas ( that I could not buy) from my mum or sister, I do not believe in bye things that are not needed.

That's why there are all those "angel trees" everywhere, the Toys for Tots drives, food drives, and tons of other ways to help needy families during the holidays. Many thousands of dollars are donated to charity during this time, each and every year. People may buy presents for their family, friends and loved ones, but very few people forget the poor. Each year, my own family is quite generous to those less fortunate than ourselves. I personally spent quite a bit of money last year on presents for total strangers, and will likely do so again this year.

Where do you live? In my town, the churches and some other groups give whole Christmas dinners and presents to needy families. The local motorcyclists have two "toy runs" to collect "toys for tots". Another Christian motorcycle club just had a "blanket run".
It sounds to me like the people in your town are falling down on the job.

Dear Sweetie 19,
i think you raise a wonderful point. However, i'm not sure why CHRISTIANS are being called out. i think you will find in any town, state, and country that there are some Christians who are following Jesus' example and reaching out to those less fortunate than them and others who do not and need God's grace to mature into Christians who do the things that Jesus has asked them.
Each and every person will be accountable to God for how they spend their money. There is nothing wrong with buying a loved one a present to show them that you love them. As John 3:16 says God so loved the world that he GAVE his only Son Jesus. So Christians ought to follow Jesus' example and love those around them (the world) and be willing to personally sacrifice.
i can only speak for myself as a youth pastor when i say that people do what is modelled for them and taught. As a youth pastor yes i own some nice things and i buy my family some nice presents but this Christmas our church is also involved in many outreaches to the poor. We are doing a blanket drive for kids in Tijuana. We do a bi-monthly ministry at the Pala Indian Reservation and actually most of the Natives there are pretty well off- but we found a pocket of about 100 hispanics who are struggling and we're raising funds to provide them with a nice Christmas. We are also purchasing a goat and some school supplies for our compassion support child in Ethiopia and doing on going fundraisers to free teenagers sold into prostitution on 3rd world countries. These ministries are year round for us. i say this not to boast- but to say that you can pick on a few people- but there are many ministries doing things for those less fortunate in the name and love of Jesus and it's not fair to pick on those Christians who maybe aren't quite there yet...
It's not fair for us to judge more harshly than God does. i just know that God knows everybody's heart and the truth is we can say that about everyone. Why did you buy yourself a $3 burger today when there are kids in Africa who haven't eaten for a week?
The key is our heart. We all know that we can be selfish, but we also know that there is opportunity after opportunity to serve and love others and we will have to answer to God one day for the way we use your time, talents, and money.
In general i think not only Christians but anyone who has the ability to help someone when they get a chance should!
Kindly,
Nickster

Why do you say "Christians" in capitals?
Take the plank out of your own eyes before trying to remove it from another.
Why shouldnt we buy gifts for our families? Don't you?
And there are plenty of CHRISTIANS who organise efforts to give to the poor over Christmas too.
PS: why do PAGANS celebrate Christmas when Christmas is about the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ??

Yes, absolutely. Charity should be part of every moral person's life- not just on Christmas. Yet I will also show the people in my life that they have touched me and that I have appreciated it through unexpected (and perhaps unnecessary) gift giving. For the record, my family doesn't celebrate the gift-giving part of Christmas. We come together and enjoy each other's company.

That is Christmas with a capital "C" because Christ is in it.
I don't take advice from people criticizing Christians. It could be just another attempt to glorify an opposing religion that tries to be dismissive of Jesus Christ - the Lord of lords and King of kings.

Yes people should help needy people , but it again depends on one own's opinion....but the best thing is that if you believe you should help the needy ones, you should start it by setting yourself as the best example and should start helping needy from your own home...The result will be others may see it and find it good and they will also do the good....
