Do you think that someone in opras position would better serve humanity by donating $1000 dollars for each answer recieved?

I wasnt emplying that it should go to the answerer but rather all of it to perhaps the best 20 answers, , the real point is, $1000 is such a drop in the bucket to her , its like .0001 of a cet to the average wage earner in the USA

Dan, this is a good question and its a shame that most of those that answered did not get your point.

It's also interesting that everyone is under the impression that Oprah is such a philanthropist. She has been reported to have given her clothes from her show to people; however those were clothes for her show - not off her back, so her company has an expense write-off. The things she has given to the audience - did she actually pay for them or did some corporate giant donate the items to her show for her to give (which became free advertisement for the corporate guy).

I am sure Oprah is charitable. The question was posed on Yahoo to give advertisement to her show that was airing on Monday, if you read it when it was posted. Perhaps she was giving the idea into the community to help foster the season's belief: "To give is better than to receive." So that while we are out shopping for family and friends, stop and give something to someone less fortunate than yourselves. We should do this year round - pay it forward.

To Dan's point - having Oprah pose it, people may tend to think that 1,000 is so little to her, what's the point of the moral value? If she had said, I will donate x-amount of dollars to each answerer who responds to what THEY would do if they had $1,000 and used it to help another person; more people would have been less judgmental about her. Asking the average Joe to pay it forward from a person who's material gain is beyond comparison seems a little..."televised-centric/advertisement gained." That's all.

YES! I really wanted to answer her question, but when i saw there were 1.000 answers.....!!!!Forget it! I think a lot of people answer this or other "famous" people's questions because they think they'll be DISCOVERED as a wonderful person!!!! I would love to give 100 people $10 each over a year, just when they least expect it, like in a supermarket queue when they can't buy a treat, or a GENUINE beggar in the street, or someone that just has given up hope and is shuffling along sadly in the street, or an Animal Shelter that is quietly in need of a small donation.
Anyways, I know where you are coming from, she is being a bit patronising, with her millions, she could help but I guess maybe she does, who knows?Good for you for your thoughts anyway! :)

it is amazing to see the level of cynicism, lack of trust, lack of understanding and lack of appreciation which is demonstrated by some answerers, particularly when they come to the questions of celebrities, their individual wealth, and charitable causes.

Oprah and many others, (see One.Org) us their time and talents, and their position in society to alert, inform, motivate and inspire us.

We know nothing of their personal philantrophy - yet some choose to condemn those who have wealth - simply because they have more comparitively - more than the person that is condemning them.

Shame!

Before you suggest what Oprah does - do the same comparison with what you have - but compare to someone who does not have food or medical care to live to the end of the time it takes you to read this. Today over 6000 people will die.

Power is with the people to change the world. Not a few.

If you beleive that you can make a difference - then you can.
If you don't - and are waiting until someone else does - then you are part of the problem.

Make a difference and inspire 2 others to do the same.
That would change the world.

Personally, I think that oprah,or someone in her position does more than her share to help humanity. oprah is yhe most careing and shareing person i have ever met in my 43 years on this earth. I personally wish that God would grant me a wish to make oprah's most wanted wish come true. Yes i know she has a lot of monet, but money can't buy everything. But no, i dont think it would better serve humanity for her to donate 1000 dollars for every answered. What happens to her when her money runs out. will anyone help her.
she is donating , to me , the best way she knows how which seems to be working

I don't know. All I know is that if I had it to give it I would.I can honestly say that if I was rich i'd donate $500 to the CHKD hospitol,$500 more to shelters and stuff, and I would love to sponsor 1 kid a month.I mean sponsor them as in I would look through books of homeless kids and pick them all 1 by 1 each month and i'd buy them food toys and clothes.A different kid would be picked each month until every kid has gotten what they need. But i'm not rich!

it is not he $1000 but the desire and the need to serve humanity which can be done with a lesser amount but a kind heart, a healing touch and a smiling face. Poeple with little or no resources have been known to serve humanity in their own special way but I am sure we do not hear about it...they do it out of love and concern not publicity or recognition.

Oprah is will to give $1,000 to some strangers

Bill Gate gave a homeless guy $1 on TV

Giving $ directly to people is a lot better than donating it to a national non-profit org. whose directors are making 1/2 million $ a year on it.

I agree, it's like me giving a dollar; when you compare her net worth to mine...glad I've given thousands of actual dollars on my own, though. Not to "charities" to be eaten up by administration and overhead; but, directly to the people in need.

Just throwing cash at people is a bit austere; better still is being a friend and then helping them financially. Is it people that they really seek to help or their own glory? Why is it that wealthy people can't understand that most decent poor folks don't want a handout; just a handup from a friend?

This is one, of many, reasons I love the Lord; He understands the poor and has shown us how to help.
"pay it forward" is just ripping off the Golden Rule. It's not a new concept, it's been around for thousands of years.

Luk 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

(Mar 12:43) And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
(Mar 12:44) For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
