it may get depressing when u come to the fact that an atheist has no one to rely on for something like eventual salvation. a belief is a powerful thing even if its based on something false. it can give that reason to go on thinking u have a purpose. an atheist hasn't got that.

I don't think there's anything depressing about understanding ourselves and the world around us, and I don't think we need the concept of a universal father figure to keep us warm at night. The world is an amazing place in its own right.
To take the agnostic position is fine, but ignores the probability of such a being. By saying there's a possibility of God, you're saying there's an X trillion to one chance that any given religion is correct, and therefore we can't ignore that possibility. Given such odds against any other occurrence most people would agree that occurrence virtually impossible, but as people have been worshipping just such a being for centuries that somehow gives that possibility more credence? That would give me more sleepless nights.

I would definitely say so. For the past 6 or 7 years, I've referred to myself as an Atheist (even now out of sheer habit), but I've come to lean more towards Agnosticism, because I simply don't know. I'm not intending to offend anyone, but I think that the Atheistic position is just as ignorant as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, or any other proponent of any religion that claims to have the answer. The fact of the matter is that no one can prove the existence or nonexistence of a higher power. Sure, someone could say that they find it highly improbable or illogical to believe in a higher power. I would certainly be among them. But to completely refute the potential existence is operating on that same claim, just relying on a different form of faith.
But back to your question: truthfully, I wish that I could believe in something higher. I was raised as a Christian until I was around 15 or 16, when I began to really question the complete lack of evidence. It's so much easier to be able to disregard that entire thought process and to just put FAITH into something, but most Agnostics and Athetists I know are completely incapable of surrendering to that mentality. And I'm not poking fun at people of faith right now; I genuinely wish that I was able to be one of them.

I am an Athiest. I never really feel depressed at all with my beliefs. It actually makes me fell like a have a better/more logical understanding of the world than religious people. I just think it is kind of ridiculous that people think that there is a God that created everything.

Life does get depressing. But that's the way it is. I can quite understand the satisfaction a christian gets with his/her belief. It must be nice to have all difficult metaphysical questions resolved for you, and to have a place in the universe, and for life to have absolute (Not objective) meaning, not to mention the sense of community with other christians.
But just because a theory makes you feel good doesn't mean it's true. If there's a fire in the house, we can't say "Acknowledging the fire makes me terrified. Therefore there is no fire."

A higher power. yes, but not a man living in a cloud who lacks the courage to show up after 100 million people have been killed in his name. They have discovered 20,000 year old caves with drawings of people in flying machines on the walls. With a thousand worldwide UFO reports every year from reliable military and airline pilots. they all can;t be weather balloons or secret aircraft that the is being tested. If advanced civilizations can get to us and we cant' get to them, that's a higher power. Let's face it, somethings very wrong with our god concept, especially when it's the "brain child" of people who thought that the Earth was flat.

No, I am depressed with how some people are so hateful and ignorant of things they don't know or understand.
I am happy being atheist and my beliefs make me happy because I love to think and use logic.
Being atheist means that you don't believe in a higher being and I don't know how that could make anyone depressed.

No I am never depressed about my belief. I am never insecure or with any doubt. I am Happy honest and full of content with the true sure knowledge of my belief. I do find many of my Christian friends with doubt and insecurity in their belief though. God bless kisses Betty.

Yes, don't you? When life sucks, you get depressed. It has nothing to do with any lack of religion. Its just life. Sometimes you're on top of the world and sometimes you're down in the dumps.
