Confess our sins .Only one thing
But a better verse is
If we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our hearts that god has raised him from the dead.you shall be saved.

(1 John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous so as to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
It means to be honest with ourselves that we are sinners.
It should not mean that we can admit our faults to a religious leader, then walk out the door and continue to make the same faults or sins.

1. Walking in the light (ie not sinning against someone) so that you can have fellowship with him - 1 John 1:7
2. Confess your sin to the one you had sin against (1 John 1:9) then you are righteous in the eyes of the one you sinned against.
3.God on His part has already forgiven all your sins by the death of Jesus on the cross so we really need to confess our sins to one another - James 5:16

According to the Word of God he has told us only to confess our sins.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. AKJV HOLY BIBLE 1st John 1:9

I guess it depends on how you wish to interpret the verse. If you wanted to take all of 1st John 1....into full context...the message may be taken differently.
The Bible is not meant to be shredded....but to be read in full context.
I interpret...Live and Learn as the two messages in that chapter.
