Performance evaluation is a term from the field of language testing and psychometrics. This variety of language testing is the most common kind of language assessment. It is used in high stakes tests such as the SAT, ACT, MCAT, GMAT, TOEFL and other language proficiency tests. In the terminology of the field, it stands in contrast to competency evaluation.

Ideally, performance evaluation considers aspects of reliability (psychometric), validity and authenticity.

Lyle Bachman at UCLA is one of the leading experts in performance evaluation research and language testing in general.

While performance evaluation has been successful in evaluating reading comprehension performance, difficulties arise in evaluating speaking, listening and writing skills which are weightier aspects of the goal of language learning, communicative competence. As a result, a balance of performance evaluation and competency evaluation is often called for by language teachers.

Performance evaluation is an assessment of you work performance based on your job description by your immediate boss. It is prepared in a standard form every year. You are asked to sign it before it is submitted to senior management.

It highlights your strengths and weakness. When you see a remark like your work “needs improvement” in certain “areas”, it discreetly states that your performance is below the standard. Based on such a negative report, your promotion can be delayed and you may be transferred to a less responsible job or even asked to submit your resignation.

If you work in a private organization, you may or may not have a fair chance to request for a revision of unfair evaluation. But, in the UN organizations, you can always appeal if you are not happy with what your boss wrote about you.

In a family-owned business, your future depends on personal likes or dislikes of a member of the family. The company may or may not even have a system of re-grading their employees through formal performance evaluation.

An excellent secretary got into trouble in a UN organization because she was correcting all documents before typing and refused to type garbled English of two bosses, both of whom had doctorate degrees. They submitted a complaint about her “insubordination” but had to withdraw it because she has earlier worked for the senior officer to whom the complaint was submitted. He knew about her proficiency in English.

Men also face job discrimination but for different reasons.

This is a part of what I wrote from my experience in my answer to a question, “Why is there such a big stigma towards ALL Christians? ''

“.... in my first job, when I was going to be sacked because of discrimination by my Hindus colleagues, who speak a different Indian language, I was saved by a Jewish manager.

His name was C***n. He noticed what was happening to me. He had already received a report from my Hindu superintendent recommending that my temporary employment should be terminated.”

These are real life examples which may alert you against unfair performance evaluation.

if your referring to your work, it's a bi annually or yearly report on your job performance, such as: Completes tasks on time, gets along with co-workers, is punctual. It could be called a report card for your job performance- so to speak. Some places I worked have had them and other places don't. If it's a good one you can be rest assured more job security.

If this is carried out by your girlfriend or wife, then you are in BIG trouble. :o)
Otherwise, it is a job review process by your manager/supervisor and relates to how well you did on performing the required tasks according to the company's expectation/goals and the results you got whether you will get a raise/bonus and by how much %.
