When Jesus spoke those words, he was saying the beginning of the 22nd Psalm (Ps 22:1 "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me from the words of my groaning?"). I really recommend looking it over - it is beautiful, powerful, and although the psalm starts in despair, it moves to joy in God's deliverance.
Jesus was suffocating on the cross and could not say the whole thing, but think of when you say the words, "Our Father..." and the entire prayer comes rushing to you. I would make the argument (as professors have before me) that Jesus was praying a psalm of sadness but also of faithfulness in God.
I hope this helps with some of your questions...

Remember that Jesus was man and God. When the sin of the world came onto Jesus, God had to turn His face away because of His holiness. That is why it felt to Jesus as if God His Father had forsaken Him. Jesus chose to go through what He HAD to go through.
Sometimes we feel that way too.

Ted C, i liked this question and has been waiting to answer one like this for a long time. thanks for the opportunity.
i'm a Hindu. i do not pray to jesus or accept him as god. i find him a good person. my concept of god is different from others. so i dont follow jesus. that is personal
it was possible that when he was on the cross, he said god, why have you foresaken me. but i think most christians did not understand it rightly. it was natural for any human being to say it at that moment. it should not be considered as jesus lost faith in god. he trusted him. but what he said next is more important, he submitted himself to the will of god. that made him christ. otherwise he would have just remained just jesus. jesus knew that he is going to be crucified, for a moment he forgot.that made him say it. also people from other faiths misinterpreted as most christians did. it is the fault of those who tried to interpret him.
all that happens is according to god's plan. so jesus cannot be going against god's plan. his plan god's plan were the same. for a moment jesus thought otherwise. but he realised it immediately. any man in such a situation couldnot have spoken, whatever he says would have come out as shouting, because you are in pain, crying screaming. so whatever he said appeared to be shouting. people again misunderstood him. also nobody inserted it in the book, it was what jesus said.
i hope you can see the clear picture now.

They wish that they could rewrite the bible and correct mistakes but they can't. The whole story of Jesus on the Cross, Did God use bad judgment? Consider that he left his son to die without intervening or even comforting him (child abuse). The point is, with the sacrificing of his son, the majority of people on this planet choose not to be Christian. God would have accomplished more if he would have let his son live and continue working miracles. God could have given him immortality. He would still be alive today and easily make other religions obsolete.

Many Christians said that he was fulfilling the prophecy in Psalm
I would like to ask them. "Eli eli lama sabathani" or "O god, o God, why has Thou forsaken me". For a faithful person, is it somehow insult God? If Jesus is truely a faithful man toward God, he wouldn't utter those word at any cost. Even if he really want to fulfill the prophecy.
To teach the crowd?
They must have forget that at that time his disciples have fled away and forsook him (except John). So who else left? The unbelievers. So the unbelievers surely wouldn't care about the content of the Bible, thus would care less about his teaching. At his last, final moment, he said, "O God, o God, why has u forsaken me?" What is this?
Do u really think that these words would inspire the Jews, inspired the unbelievers?
Don't be silly. It will only make them laugh. They will say, "Haha, poor Jesus, look at him crying for help" "See, he is a liar"
Would Jesus want that? Would Jesus want the whole Israel, who did not believe in him , become more inspired to not believe in him, not to believe in God? U answer.
So Jesus would never say such a thing. Because it will lead his people astray, to become more determine not to believe in him. Do u agree with me?
So, back to your question, why Jesus said like that?
He has no reason to say it.
Jesus is a wonderful person. Do u agree? If your answer is yes, then why a man, such a wonderful man, would say like that? Unless, it was somebody else. It was somebody else who was put on the cross, not Jesus. Only that fake Jesus would cry like that.
#That they(the Jews) said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah"; but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:#
The Quran: Chapter An-Nisa, Chapter 4, Verse 157
In this verse, Muslim believe that instead Jesus peace be upon him, it was somebody else who died on the cross. God made that person very resemble to Jesus. Therefore, the so-called Jesus cried like that, "Eli eli lama sabathani"
But what about the historians, the eyewitness that saw 'Jesus' died on the cross? Many Christians have ask me that. As i told u, it was somebody else who appear to be like Jesus died on the cross. Enough cheese and chalk.
So who was that man? The story about that man was never mentioned in the Quran.
But it was mentioned in the Gospel of Barnabas, that the person is Judas the traitor. U can check for yourself later.

This was asked also last night....Jesus was in pain, Jesus can sense that his Father has, as it were, withdrawn protection from him to allow his integrity to be tested to the limit, and he quotes David’s words in Psalm 22:1.. Someone puts a sponge soaked in sour wine to Jesus’ lips. Having had some of the wine, Jesus gasps: “It has been accomplished!” Then he cries out, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit,” bows his head, and expires.—John 19:28-30; Matthew 27:46; Luke 23:46.
Jesus once said, I and the Father are one, meaning they are one in decision, purpose, thinking....
wasnt sure...Did he shouted to God or was that just a question?
No mistakes there for the author (God's thought was in there not the human author)
Not exactly what you look for but Romans 5 says 6 For, indeed, Christ, while we were yet weak, died for ungodly men at the appointed time. 7 For hardly will anyone die for a righteous [man]; indeed, for the good [man], perhaps, someone even dares to die. 8 But God recommends his own love to us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

I have heard many explanations for it, and some of them seem quite possible. The following is just my opinion.
Jesus was beginning to quote a Psalm. The 22nd actually. I think He did it to bring faith to His followers who were standing there watching Him die and not sure what was going on.
If anyone standing around there (and I'm sure the Jews who were there did) knew that Psalm, they would have stood in amazement at the prophecy which had been quoted there coming true right before their eyes.
As usual, Jesus, even during that agony, was thinking of others.

Jesus is quoting Psalm 22. He could not quote the entire Psalm because he was dying.
If you read further in Psalm 22, you can see that God does not abandon or forsake Jesus, but the opposite.

Because Jesus was a man aswell as the Son of God. He said Himself, if it is possible let the cup pass from me. He didn't want to experience all that pain, and who in their right mind would? It was God's will and thats why He went through with it.
I believe that Jesus cried these words, because in He was probably delirious with pain, and as I said, He didn't want to do it in the first place, however, He was crying to God, why me, why me?
People seem to forget that whilst yes, He did die for our sins....he didn't necessarily want to, but thats how much God loves us!!

He was fulfilling Psalm 22
which begins...
Psa 22:1 To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
Was Jesus doubting God??? NO, it was to teach, faith....
Joh 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
