This really depends on the child. . I would have to say be two, two and a half you should be understanding him. If you are really concern speak with your pediatrician.

I am mother of twins..... and both are different. One started making noises and saying yes and no clearly when 17 months old and the other one took 2 whole years to say anything.
One started understanding simple orders right from the 18th momths and the other still dont feel like listening to me..;)
So every kid develop at his own pace. Boys are always hard to raise.
On a lighter note.... its absolutely true that some boys dont achieve this milestone all their lives.. and they are called husbands...Cheers

I would have to say when they are around 1 year and 9 months old, but it all depends on the child because everyone is different. It may take some longer than the rest. I think my nephew didn't start talking until he was 2 years old or around there anyway.

My oldest was 1 when he started making noises that i could understand....no one else but family could...Ba meant bottle O meant durango and just little syllables. He was about 2 1/2-3 when he started making sense and using sentences.
My second is almost 2 and just now starting to use words all the time, but he is using full words, not syllables and everyone can understand him. He used to say things every now and then. Every sense he was about 16 months he could say yea and shake his head no which helped a lot.
Babies develope differently and boys slower than girls. Good Luck with your child and if you are really worried, just ask his doctor.
Good Luck!!

I got out my sons baby books out to give you accurate answers. Both my son's started babbling and really discovered their voices in the beginning of their 3rd month. 4th month they were picking up the toys around them. They both were saying dada in the 5th month, This is also when both boys started holding their own bottles. Around 6-7 months there are alot of words you don't really understand. But, they could say baba, nana, wha, no, out
cherish them when they are tiny, I have teenagers :)

Well my nephew was understanding quite a bit before or just right before he was ! year old he's pretty strong for his age (he's 2 1/2 now) but other than that he's pretty average so I'd guess around then.

For all the kids in my family we could all speak pretty fluently at 18months old and have proper conversations with people. I'd say definitely at the latest two years old. We were all toilet trained [although you would get the occasional accident] and could do pretty much everything by two.
