If you can truly solve peoples problems with your software you can get 6 digits (even in oklahoma). You will get paid what you are worth. If you are fast, well organized and accurate you can get jobs out more quickly and on lump sum jobs that means bonus!

I would also say that may programming slaves who implement others logic probally make $50,000 (including insurance etc) just to be code monkeys.

Dont make a choice for the money. decide if you like the logic and problem solving of programming. remember there is much that is tedious in programming too.

I am not from California so I don't know how much they make. But I am a Software Engineer in some asian country. I know MIT is pretty good for studying Software Engineering. Math is somehow required but not necessarily. You must be good in logic in order to write a software. Good luck...

Hardware engineers and software engineers are basically the same cause the hardware makers use advanced software and their own knowledge to make hardware and the software makers use software to and their own knowledge to make other software and Programming. But if you want to get technical Hardware is an actual item and software is virtual. A sort of easy job is to be a hardware guy cause it isnt as hard as programming.

It's hard to say - that's a field with a wide variance. I work in Canada, but I'd ballpark a starting wage of 40-55 K per year. It climbs rapidly though. Often after 1-2 years engineers are making 20-30 K MORE than what they started at.
