You Can get Knoppix a Linux version that runs from CD Without using the HD. www.knoppix.net, just be sure you get the english version.
Then there is the Ultimate Boot CD from Sourceforge.net which includes a lot of software to repair your Windows installation. You can enable your internet from either of them. Knoppix is easier to work with, and is kind of like running windows.
You can get the BartPE package to boot from the CD you make with a few tools to use and also use it as a base to build what more you need. BartPE has a lot of potential if you learn to incorporate applications into it.
All of these are free, they come as iso files to be burnt to a CD. You can order Knoppix and have the CD mailed to you for not much. Maybe you can get UBCD and Bart PE premade too.

Yes, you can boot (=start) your computer off a floppy disk, a cdrom or even a USB stick. Look for the 'boot sequence' menu entry in the BIOS (to access your BIOS, hit the 'Del' key right after you switch your computer on - it may be a different key or key combination depending on your computer model)

If you install a boot loader (a small software that resides in the very few first sectors of your hard disk), you can select which operating system to boot from (provided you have multiple OS installed).

actually windows is the OS.Just like that there r many OSs. So u can use Linux, DOS and all to boot ur system.

U heard abt Startup disc? thru that u can start ur company in DOS mode. With the help of the Floppy or CD.

In linux there is another one tech knwn as Knoppix, that is the linux OS is in the cd rom, with that cd rom itself, u can boot ur system. there is no need of installing that linux in ur system.

try google search for more details.
