English ranks 4th in terms of people who speak it, after Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, and Spanish. However, it is used as the official international language in aerospace (pilots and air traffic controllers). It is also very commonly spoken as a second language throughout the world. Although it is not the international language officially speaking, it is the international language practically speaking.

At the UN, there are six: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian, though nearly all "business" is conducted in the first three.
In most international and scientific bodies, English and French are the two standard languages: the Olympics, ISO, SI, the FIA, medical bodies, etc.
As someone else mentioned, English is the standard amongst airport control towers *execpt* in France or in Canada's province of Quebec where you are as likely to hear French.
