If the car is left unlocked, is this an invitation to car theives, and is the penalty greater if they have to break in to steal your car?

I am not well versed on Californian Penal Code but with anything....It doesn't matter if force is used or not in order to get to the ultimate goal which is the theft of the motor vehicle. UUMV (unauthorized use of a motor vehicle) is the offense that the district attorney will be filing on you. He won't file burglary and UUMV unless special circumstances exist. Whether force is used or not makes no difference. All i can tell you is to lock your door anyways. The more obstacles a thief has to encounter the smaller the chance of him actually going through with the crime
